Rediscover the Origins - The arrival of Aryans from south west of India (500 B.C) marks the birth of  The  Sinhala race according to The  ancient chronicle - Mahawansa. They first set foot on the beaches of “ Thambapanni” arwew which literally means copper coloured earth . In the process new settlements & flourishing cities emerged in the vicinity  . Kudarama is located in the environs of these once great kingdoms to relate the sagas of a bygone era.

What does “ Kudarama ‘ stand for  ?A  Canvas tent utilized as shelter  during long jungle expeditions is known as a  “Kudarama”  in local lingo . Such means of shelter  were not known or seen  before the advent of European influence in Sri Lanka . The arrival of these explorers to the island brought about an awareness of same amongst the natives .

Kudarama way of living ! The subtle tent interior with protective nets , provide  with ample airflow in a well ventilated environment .Preserved energy illuminates the rustic wooden bed capped with  a cozy mattress atop perfumed linen ensuring  an unforgettable night of bliss. Furnished with a  utility rack and dressing table for the ladies , the  tent provides a  feminine outlook as well . The sizable private deck area is ideal for an  afternoon slumber or to browse thru  the Kudarama literature with a  chilled beverage by your side . Our sanitation facilities with En-Suite baths are the best that one could think of in the wilderness .

Dining area & menu A Common dining hall is set up overlooking the natural water hole (aliya wala) on tree stumps with an all timber interior. Candle lit pillars illuminate the area to provide an atmosphere of total ambience.

Kudarama is closely associated with traditional Sri Lankan cuisine with a variety of sea- food and locally produced vegetables. The men behind these preparations are well versed in  the natural environment to obtain ingredients for their authentic dishes . The assortment of herbs and spices used in preservation of meats ensures that “ bush “ dinners are an  experience to savour.

Swimming Pool Probably the only “luxury” one would encounter for the next 100 kms up north! The makeshift pool is 40 feet in length & is enveloped amongst  the shrub to immerse yourself & soothe your tired limbs after a days excursion to one of the many interesting locations in the locality. It is set in complete seclusion enabling you to relax in privacy.

Anawilundawa - Awesome wetland –Anawilundawa was declared as Sri Lanka’s  second Ramsar wetland representing all major wetland Eco systems in a span of just 1.5 km crow flight. The cascading tank system is the feeding & nesting ground for over 150 species of birds. The high concentration of water birds and number of endemic fish recorded have been accorded  Ramsar status.

Wilpattu National Park -  The island’s first national park. R.L Spittle – The great anthropologist and authority on Veddhas ( aboriginal people of Sri Lanka )  was the crusader to the establishment of this magnificent park blanketed with brooding jungles. Yet even today Wilpattu remains the  least disturbed showpiece on our soil. Famous for its leopards and stunning “Villus”, currently 31 species of mammals  have  been recorded. The avifauna and floristic diversity is endless making it a very resourceful national park.

The Dutch & Portuguese Bays - Vistas of many civilizations lie buried along the shores of  “Thambapanni” in the midst of extensive sea grass beds where the once thriving Dugong ( sea mammal )  dwelled. Numerous islands in a single file, work as an effective barrier against the ravaging waters of the  Indian Ocean . This has influenced many to ascertain the existence of the  pre- King  Vijaya era when Roman envoys called in for lucrative trade ties. A quest to rediscover the origins !

Paramakanda & Tonigala rock fortresses - Geologically , this is the only exhibit of the  Jurassic period rocks found in the island.  The boulder strewn mountain mass rises abruptly to 200 feet from the plateau & depicts  an imposing picture to the  naked eye. The sites are strewn with many ancient locations  worth discovering.

The semi jungle environs of Kudarama provides an  ideal backdrop for cycle trails, bush walks, fishing in native boats or to visit chenna plots. The abundant village life also sprawls into many facets , worth discovering.
